Why this applies to Thioridazine

Thioridazine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the gist with glucomannan and thioridazine (Mellaril). Glucomannan is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your gut. That gel can trap pills sitting alongside it and slow or lower how much of a swallowed medicine actually gets absorbed. So the concern is that less of your thioridazine may reach your bloodstream, which could mean it doesn't control your symptoms as well as it should.

This is a theoretical, timing-based issue rather than a chemical clash, and thioridazine is not a prodrug, so it just comes down to spacing them out. The usual fix is simple: take your thioridazine first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan. Please don't change anything on your own. Run the timing past your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Thioridazine Used For?

Brand name: Mellaril

Thioridazine Hydrochloride tablets are used for the management of schizophrenia — but only in patients who have already tried at least two other antipsychotic medications without adequate results, either because those drugs didn't work well enough or caused intolerable side effects.

Because thioridazine carries serious heart-rhythm risks, it is considered a last-resort option for schizophrenia, not a first-line treatment. It is not approved for dementia-related psychosis or any other psychiatric condition.
