Laboratory research suggests that goat's rue extract can inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, goat's rue might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's something worth knowing about combining goat's rue with Spinraza (nusinersen). The concern on file comes from lab studies suggesting goat's rue may make platelets a little less sticky, which in theory could nudge up bleeding risk. With Spinraza, this matters in a specific way: the medicine is given as an injection into the fluid around the spinal cord (a lumbar puncture). Anything that affects clotting could, in theory, raise the chance of bruising or bleeding around that injection site.

I want to be honest that this is theoretical and based only on laboratory work, not real patient cases, so please don't panic. Still, since timing around your spinal injections matters, it's smart to mention goat's rue to your neurology team and pharmacist before your next dose so they can plan safely.

Brand name: Spinraza

Spinraza (nusinersen) is used to treat spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) — a genetic disease that causes progressive muscle weakness by reducing the body's ability to make a protein called SMN (survival motor neuron). Spinraza is approved for pediatric and adult patients with SMA.

Spinraza is given by intrathecal injection — directly into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord — so the medicine can reach the central nervous system where it's needed most.
