Barium Sulfate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Gum Arabic interacts with.

Theoretically, gum arabic can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber content.
Gum arabic has been used as a suspending osmotic agent in drug formulations. It might improve bioavailability of water-insoluble drugs like naproxen, but reduce absorption of polar drugs like amoxicillin. To avoid changes in absorption, take gum arabic 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the good news with this pairing: barium sulfate isn't a drug your body absorbs or breaks down. When you swallow it before an x-ray or CT scan, it stays inside your digestive tract on purpose, coating the lining so the radiologist gets a clear picture, then it passes out in your stool. So gum arabic, a soluble fiber, isn't going to change blood levels or 'strength' the way it might with a pill you actually absorb.

The one practical concern is that extra fiber can add bulk and trap water in the gut, which could in theory blur or thin out the barium coating. To keep your scan clean, I'd skip gum arabic around your imaging appointment and check the timing with your pharmacist or the imaging center.

What Is Barium Sulfate Used For?

Brand names: E-Z-HD, Readi-Cat 2, Readi-Cat 2 Smoothies, Varibar

Barium sulfate is used before imaging studies to help doctors see the inside of the digestive tract on X-rays and CT scans. Different branded products are approved for different procedures and patient groups.

Readi-Cat 2 and Readi-Cat 2 Smoothie flavors are used to outline the GI tract during CT scans of the abdomen. E-Z-Paque and Liquid E-Z-Paque are used for single-contrast X-ray studies of the esophagus, stomach, and small bowel. E-Z-HD is used for double-contrast X-ray studies of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum in patients 12 and older. E-Z-Disk tablets help evaluate whether the esophagus is open (patent) in patients 12 and older. ENTERO Vu 24% is used for small bowel X-ray exams in adults. E-Z-Paste is used in single-contrast X-rays of the esophagus, pharynx, and related areas. Varibar Pudding, Varibar Honey, Varibar Nectar, Varibar Thin Honey, and Varibar Thin Liquid are used in modified barium swallow studies to assess how well a person swallows.
