Drug & supplement interaction

Hypnotherapy + Lorazepam

Lorazepam brand name: Ativan.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Hypnotherapy and Lorazepam in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Hypnotherapy and Lorazepam

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Lorazepam and Hypnotherapy in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — research on Hypnotherapy alongside specific medications may be limited.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Hypnotherapy at all — not against Lorazepam, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

Hypnotherapy is a treatment rather than something you take. Tell whoever provides it which medicines you use, and ask your prescriber whether it is appropriate for your health and treatment. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Hypnotherapy and Lorazepam May Share a Side Effect

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so having Hypnotherapy while taking the medicine can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

Effects for Lorazepam come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Hypnotherapy come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 178,727 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Lorazepam that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

Hypnotherapy in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy Possibly Safe

When hypnotherapy is used appropriately. Use of self-hypnosis during labor following teaching sessions during pregnancy has not been shown to affect birthweight, well-being of the newborn, admission or re-admission for neonatal care, maternal stay in the hospital, readmission to hospital, lactation establishment, or ability to care for the infant. However, the use of hypnotherapy should not delay the time to diagnosis or treatment with more proven therapies.

What Lorazepam Is Prescribed For, and What Hypnotherapy Has Been Studied For

These two come up together because they touch the same health topic — not because they do the same job. Lorazepam is a prescription medicine with approved uses on its FDA label. Hypnotherapy is a treatment: what follows is what researchers have looked at it for, and how strong that evidence is.

Lorazepam is prescribed for: Lorazepam tablets (Ativan and generic) and the oral solution are used to manage anxiety disorders or for short-term relief of anxiety symptoms, including anxiety that comes with depressive symptoms. Loreev XR, an extended-release capsule, is specifically indicated for adults with anxiety disorders who are already stable on lorazepam tablets taken three times daily. Ativan and generic lorazepam injections are used in two additional situations: treating status epilepticus (a medical emergency involving prolonged or repeated seizures) and as a pre-surgery medication in adults to produce sedation, ease anxiety, and reduce memory of events on the day of surgery.

Hypnotherapy has been studied for:

  • Insomnia studied, not established Hypnotherapy has been studied for this. Natural Medicines rates the evidence: Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Read what the research shows

    Hypnotherapy for insomnia

Small clinical studies suggest that hypnosis may improve some measures of sleep quality in patients with insomnia.

Effectiveness ratings and the research summaries above are the verbatim record from the Natural Medicines database, which grades evidence from “Effective” down to “Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate”. A rating below the top of that scale means researchers have looked at it — not that it works, and never that it can stand in for a prescribed medicine. Do not stop or replace Lorazepam on your own; if you are taking Hypnotherapy for the same health topic, tell your prescriber, especially if the medicine is being adjusted to a target.

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. This page covers Hypnotherapy only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Lorazepam page lists 119 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: 1,4-butanediol (major), Activated Charcoal (major), Beer (major), Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (ghb) (major) and Grapefruit (major).

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Lorazepam page

“Lorazepam (Ativan) works by slowing brain activity, and that is exactly why this list deserves real caution. Of the 119 supplement and herbal ingredients on file, 78 are themselves nervous-system depressants, so adding them can deepen drowsiness or, at the extreme, slow breathing.”

About Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnotherapy?

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Pain management
  • Smoking cessation
  • Sleep problems
  • Habit and weight management

Hypnotherapy is a mind-body technique where a trained therapist guides you into a focused, relaxed state to help you change thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. It is not a supplement or herb, and when done by a qualified professional it is generally considered safe. Evidence is strongest for conditions like irritable bowel syndrome and certain types of pain, but results vary from person to person.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Hypnotherapy is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Hypnotherapy record says about it on its own.

Hypnotherapy: dosing

There is no standard "dose" for hypnotherapy because it is a therapy, not a substance. Treatment is usually given as a series of sessions with a trained therapist, and the number of sessions varies based on your goals and the condition being treated. Many programs involve several weekly sessions, and you may also practice self-hypnosis or use guided recordings between visits. Follow the plan recommended by your qualified provider.

Having Hypnotherapy While Taking Lorazepam: Common Questions

Is it safe to have Hypnotherapy while taking Lorazepam?
We do not list a known interaction between Hypnotherapy and Lorazepam. That does not guarantee the combination is risk-free, so confirm with your pharmacist or doctor — especially if you take other medications or have a health condition.
Do Hypnotherapy and Lorazepam have any of the same side effects?
Yes — our sources link each of them separately to one of the same effects. That is not an interaction: neither changes how your body handles the other. It does mean that if one of those effects turns up, it can be harder to tell which one is behind it. They are listed on this page with the source behind each.
Are Hypnotherapy and Lorazepam used for the same thing?
They overlap in purpose, which usually means the real question is whether you need both rather than whether they are safe together. This page lists the shared uses and how strong the evidence is for Hypnotherapy in each. That is a conversation for your prescriber, especially if Lorazepam is being adjusted to a target.
Does Lorazepam interact with any supplements?
Yes. Lorazepam has documented interactions with 119 supplements in our database — Hypnotherapy is not one of them. The Lorazepam interaction page linked on this page lists every one, ranked by severity.
