Inosine and Colchicine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIGOUT DRUGS

Why this applies to Colchicine

Colchicine falls under ANTIGOUT DRUGS — the group Inosine interacts with.

Inosine might reduce the effects of antigout medications.
Inosine increases uric acid levels in the serum and urine, potentially resulting in hyperuricemia and reducing the effects of medications used for the prevention and treatment of gout.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: colchicine is your gout-prevention medicine, and its whole job is to keep those painful uric acid flare-ups under control. Inosine works against that goal because, when your body breaks it down, one of the leftover products is uric acid. So inosine can push your uric acid up, which is exactly the thing colchicine is trying to keep down.

In real life, that could mean colchicine doesn't protect you as well, and you might notice more gout attacks (sudden, intense joint pain, often in the big toe). To be fair, this concern is based on how the two work on paper, not strong human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, if you're taking colchicine to manage gout, adding inosine seems counterproductive. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Inosine

What is Inosine?

  • Athletic performance and energy
  • Multiple sclerosis (raising uric acid)
  • Parkinson's disease (raising uric acid)
  • General health and recovery

Inosine is a nucleoside (a building block of DNA and RNA) that the body makes on its own and is also sold as a supplement, mostly marketed for athletic performance. Solid evidence that it boosts exercise performance is lacking, and because it raises uric acid levels, it may pose risks for people with gout or kidney problems. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

Colchicine is not a pain reliever and should not be used for pain from other causes.
