Here's the gist: Attapulgite (Kaopectate in Canada) is an anti-diarrhea product that works right inside your gut by soaking up extra fluid and binding loose, watery stool. Karaya gum is a fiber laxative that swells into a gel when it hits water in your intestines. Since both of these act physically in the gut rather than getting absorbed into your blood, taking them close together could let the karaya gum trap or thicken things in a way that may blunt how well the attapulgite settles your stomach.

This is a theoretical, minor concern based on how the two behave, not on strong studies. To be safe, separating them by 30 to 60 minutes is reasonable. And honestly, using a laxative and an anti-diarrheal at the same time is a bit of a tug-of-war, so check with your pharmacist about why you're using both.

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.
