Here's the thing to keep in mind: karaya gum is a fiber that swells into a gel when it hits water in your gut. Any fiber like this can physically grab onto an oral medication and slow or reduce how much your body absorbs. With oral cromolyn sodium, that could mean a bit less of the drug gets into your system, so it may not control your symptoms as well.

I'll be honest, this concern is mostly theoretical and based on how fiber laxatives behave in general, not on solid studies with cromolyn specifically. The simple fix is timing: take your cromolyn first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your karaya gum. If you're unsure, your pharmacist can help you map out a schedule.

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.

What Is Cromolyn Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Intal, Novo Cromolyn

Cromolyn sodium inhalation solution is used on a regular, daily basis to help manage bronchial asthma in adults and children two years of age and older. It works best as a preventive medicine — it will not stop an asthma attack that has already started.

It can also be used as a single dose taken shortly before exposure to known triggers — such as exercise, cold dry air, animal dander, or environmental pollutants — to help prevent the sudden airway tightening those triggers can cause.
