Here's the gist with Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and karaya gum. Karaya gum is a bulk-forming fiber that swells into a gel in your gut. Anytime you take a fiber like this close to a pill you swallow, it can trap a little of that medicine and slightly change how much gets absorbed. With Tamiflu, the worry would be absorbing a touch less, which in theory could make it work a bit weaker against your flu symptoms.

Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, not something well documented for this specific drug. The easy fix is simple spacing: take your Tamiflu first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the karaya gum. If you're unsure, your pharmacist can confirm the timing for you.

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. What Is Oseltamivir Used For?

Brand name: Tamiflu

Oseltamivir is used to treat acute, uncomplicated influenza A and B in patients 2 weeks of age and older who have had symptoms for no more than 48 hours. It is also used to prevent (prophylaxis) influenza A and B in patients 1 year of age and older.

Keep in mind: oseltamivir is not a substitute for your annual flu vaccine. It does not work against bacterial infections or illnesses caused by anything other than influenza viruses.
