Here's the simple version: karaya gum is a bulky fiber that swells into a gel in your gut. When that gel is sitting there at the same time as a pill like phendimetrazine, it can physically grab onto the medicine and slow or change how much of it your body absorbs. This isn't about liver enzymes, it's just a timing and contact issue in the digestive tract.

This is a theoretical, minor concern based on how fiber works, not strong proof. Still, since phendimetrazine is an appetite suppressant you want working reliably, an easy fix helps. Take your phendimetrazine first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your karaya gum, and drink plenty of water. If you have questions, your pharmacist can confirm the best spacing for you.

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.

What Is Phendimetrazine Used For?

Brand names: Plegine, Metra, Weightrol

Phendimetrazine is used short-term — typically a few weeks — to help manage obesity in adults who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher when other risk factors like high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol are present, and who have not lost enough weight through diet and exercise alone.

Phendimetrazine Tartrate extended-release capsules are specifically indicated for adults meeting those BMI criteria, including those with certain risk factors. Phendimetrazine Tartrate tablets are indicated for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher. Both forms are approved for use as a single medication only — not in combination with other weight-loss drugs or stimulants.
