Here's the simple version: karaya gum is a fiber that swells into a gel in your stomach. When that gel is sitting there at the same time as your promazine (Sparine), it can grab onto the medicine and change how much your body absorbs. The effect could go either way, meaning your dose might end up working a little weaker or a little stronger than expected.

Promazine is an older antipsychotic, so if absorption shifts you might notice more drowsiness, dizziness, or dry mouth, or on the flip side less symptom control. The good news is this is only a theoretical, minor concern. An easy fix is spacing them out: take your promazine first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the karaya gum. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist.

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.
