Here's the good news on this pairing: the concern listed in our database is about bulk-forming fibers like karaya gum affecting how oral medicines get absorbed in the gut. Verteporfin (Visudyne) isn't an oral drug at all, it's given as an infusion into a vein right before your eye doctor shines the activating laser light. Because it never travels through your stomach or intestines, karaya gum has no real way to interfere with it.

This is a theoretical, minor note that simply doesn't line up with how verteporfin works. Your fiber laxative won't change the eye treatment or its effects. Still, it never hurts to mention all your supplements to your pharmacist or care team so everything stays on record.

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.

About Verteporfin Injection

What Is Verteporfin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Visudyne

Visudyne (verteporfin for injection) is used to treat a specific type of abnormal blood vessel growth under the retina called predominantly classic subfoveal choroidal neovascularization (CNV) — new, leaky vessels that form beneath the central part of the retina. It is approved for three underlying causes of this condition.

Visudyne is indicated when CNV is caused by age-related macular degeneration (AMD), pathologic myopia (severe nearsightedness that damages the eye), or presumed ocular histoplasmosis (an eye condition linked to a fungal infection). It is not indicated for the predominantly occult (hidden) form of CNV, where there is not enough evidence to support its use.
