PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS
Why this applies to Tretinoin
Tretinoin falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Light Therapy interacts with.
Concomitant use of photosensitizing drugs with light therapy may increase the risk for phototoxicity and should be avoided.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the connection: tretinoin (especially the topical creams like Retin-A, Renova, and Altreno) can make your skin more sensitive to light. Light therapy works by shining bright light at you, so pairing the two could, in theory, raise your odds of a reaction like redness, stinging, burning, or sunburn-like irritation on your skin.
I want to be honest with you though: this concern is theoretical, based on how these two work rather than on real-world reports. Most light therapy lamps used for mood and sleep filter out UV rays, which are the main culprit for skin reactions. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially so they can confirm your lamp is UV-filtered.

- Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
- Non-seasonal depression
- Sleep and circadian rhythm problems
- Jet lag and shift-work sleep issues
- Certain skin conditions
Light therapy uses controlled exposure to bright artificial light and is best supported for seasonal affective disorder, where it is a recognized treatment option. About Tretinoin
What Is Tretinoin Used For?
Brand names: Vesanoid, Retin-A, Renova, Altreno
Tretinoin is used in two very different ways. Topical products (creams, gels and a lotion) are mainly used for acne vulgaris. Age ranges differ by product: Retin-A MICRO is for ages 12 and older, and Altreno is for ages 9 and older.
Renova cream is different. It is used as an add-on for easing fine facial wrinkles alongside skin care and sun avoidance. Tretinoin capsules are a cancer medicine for inducing remission in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) in adults and children 1 year and older, in specific situations.

Tretinoin Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Tretinoin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Light Therapy — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
