Lycopene + Isotretinoin
Isotretinoin brand names: Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, Sotret, Absorica, and others.
We found no known interaction between Lycopene and Isotretinoin in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.
Lycopene and Isotretinoin
We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.
No Known Interaction Found
We did not find a documented interaction between Isotretinoin and Lycopene in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.
If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.
Lycopene safety at a glance
Pregnancy & breastfeeding ratings are from Natural Medicines (Therapeutic Research Center) — the full detail is in the Special populations card below. Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.
Why No Interaction Is Listed for Isotretinoin
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Isotretinoin is filed under 4 classifications — including retinoids, cytochrome p450 2c8 (cyp2c8) substrates, photosensitizing drugs. Lycopene has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (moderate) — and none of Isotretinoin’s classifications are among them.
Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.
Lycopene Does Interact With Other Medications
Lycopene has 122 moderate known drug interactions in our database — Isotretinoin isn’t one of them. If you take anything else, check it against the full list below.

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Lycopene or Isotretinoin, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Isotretinoin
This page covers Lycopene only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Isotretinoin page lists 49 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Vitamin A (major), African Wild Potato (moderate), Alfalfa (moderate) and Angelica Archangelica (moderate).
By severity: 2 major · 35 moderate · 12 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Isotretinoin page
“Vitamin A is the first thing anyone on isotretinoin (Accutane, Absorica, Claravis) should check their supplements for, because isotretinoin is itself a vitamin A derivative and stacking more on top can push levels into toxic range. It is one of two major-rated entries among the 49 supplements and herbs known to interact with this acne…”

- Source: the Natural Medicines (TRC Healthcare) clinical database — the evidence-graded professional reference for herb & supplement interactions.
- Citation library: 103,510 references behind our interaction content, 65,311 of them resolved to verified PubMed/DOI sources. See every Lycopene reference on this page ↓

- What “no known interaction” means: no documented interaction in the sources above — not a guarantee of safety. Supplements are studied far less than prescription drugs, so we say exactly what the evidence supports, and nothing more.
About Lycopene
What is Lycopene?
- Heart health
- Prostate health
- Antioxidant support
- Sun/skin protection
- General wellness
Lycopene is a red plant pigment and antioxidant found mainly in tomatoes and other red fruits. Eating lycopene-rich foods is linked with possible heart and prostate benefits, but evidence from supplements is mixed and far from conclusive. For most people, getting lycopene from food is a safe and reasonable choice; talk to your pharmacist before taking high-dose supplements.
Pigment extracted from the fruit (mainly tomato) · Capsules, softgels, and as a natural food source (tomatoes, watermelon, guava, pink grapefruit)
An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Lycopene is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Lycopene record says about it on its own.
Lycopene: dosing
There is no official standard dose of lycopene for any health condition. Amounts used in studies have varied widely, and it is unclear what dose, if any, provides a benefit. If you choose to take a supplement, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed the recommended amount. For many people, getting lycopene from a balanced diet rich in tomatoes and other red fruits is a simple and reasonable approach.

About Isotretinoin
What Is Isotretinoin Used For?
Brand names: Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, Sotret, Absorica, Roaccutane
Isotretinoin is used to treat severe recalcitrant nodular acne — large, deep, inflamed breakouts (nodules 5 mm or bigger) that haven't cleared with conventional treatments like antibiotics. It is approved for non-pregnant patients 12 years of age and older. Brands include Absorica, Absorica LD, Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, and generic isotretinoin capsules.
Because of its serious potential side effects, isotretinoin is reserved for patients whose acne is truly severe and has not responded to other standard treatments. A typical course lasts 15 to 20 weeks, and many patients experience prolonged remission — sometimes permanent clearing — after a single course.
Most-Reported Side Effects for Isotretinoin
From FAERS, the FDA’s public side-effect reporting system (46,523 reports, all brands). Reports are voluntary and are not proof the drug caused the effect.

Isotretinoin Is Linked to Lower Levels of 4 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Isotretinoin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Lycopene — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
