Multivitamins + Mineral Oil

Mineral Oil brand name: Kondremul Plain.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Multivitamins and Mineral Oil in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the label for Mineral Oil states a food rule worth keeping to.

Multivitamins and Mineral Oil

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Mineral Oil and Multivitamins in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Multivitamins at all — not against Mineral Oil, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

What Multivitamins Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Mineral Oil. It is the side-effect record for Multivitamins on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. If something new turns up after you add Multivitamins, this list is the first place to look. One entry is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

Special populations

Multivitamins in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Lactation Likely Safe

When multivitamins specifically formulated for pregnancy or lactation are used orally and appropriately. A multivitamin containing nutrients in amounts that do not exceed Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) during pregnancy or lactation should be safe in this population. Keep in mind that people consuming other sources of nutrients in addition to a multivitamin should use caution not to exceed tolerable upper intake levels (ULs) of these nutrients. Consuming nutrients in amounts above the ULs increases the risk of adverse effects. See the Prenatal Vitamins monograph for information about multivitamins specifically formulated for use during pregnancy.

How to take them

Some Mineral Oil Products Have a Food Rule — Multivitamins Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Mineral Oil says to take it with food. If you take Multivitamins on an empty stomach out of habit, keep them separate — and take Mineral Oil with a meal where the label says to.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Mineral Oil products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. The label we read is quoted below — check the directions on your own box or bottle, or ask your pharmacist, for how to take the exact product you were given.

Directions: * Do not take with meals.

From the Dosage and Administration section of the FDA label we read for Mineral Oil — where that label names a specific product, the instruction is that product's. See the Mineral Oil drug page ›

A food rule is not an interaction — it is about how much of the medicine you absorb. The directions that came with your own product, and your pharmacist, outrank anything on this page.

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. This page covers Multivitamins only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Mineral Oil page lists 17 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Mineral Oil page

“Everything on record for mineral oil (Kondremul Plain) comes down to one theme, absorption in the gut, and it deserves genuine care, chiefly because of activated charcoal. Charcoal binds a wide array of medicines and can sharply cut how much of them the body actually takes in, and it carries this list's only major rating, so understand…”

About Multivitamins

What is Multivitamins?

  • Filling nutrient gaps in the diet
  • General wellness support
  • Pregnancy nutrition (with prenatal versions)
  • Supporting older adults' nutrition
  • Energy and immune support (popular belief)

Multivitamins are combination supplements that provide many vitamins and minerals in one product, and they can help cover nutrient gaps for people who don't get enough from food. For most healthy adults who eat a balanced diet, the proven health benefits are modest, but certain groups—such as pregnant people, older adults, and those with restricted diets—may benefit more. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor to choose a product that fits your needs and avoid taking too much of any single nutrient.

Tablets, capsules, gummies, chewables, liquids, powders

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Multivitamins is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Multivitamins record says about it on its own.

Multivitamins: dosing

There is no single "correct" dose for multivitamins because each product contains a different mix of nutrients. Most are designed to provide amounts at or near the recommended daily intake for common vitamins and minerals. The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not take more than one daily serving unless told to by a healthcare provider. Avoid combining several supplements that contain the same nutrients, since this can push you above safe limits.Your pharmacist can help you pick a product matched to your age, sex, and health needs, and check that it won't overlap with other supplements you take.
