Avacopan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Oregon Grape interacts with.

Theoretically, Oregon grape might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of Oregon grape, moderately inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4).

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear avacopan (Tavneos) out of your system. The berberine in Oregon grape may gently slow that same enzyme down. When the cleanup crew works slower, more avacopan can hang around in your blood, which could nudge up its effects and side effects, things like nausea, headache, higher blood pressure, or liver enzyme changes that your doctor already watches with lab work.

I'll be straight with you: this concern is theoretical, based mostly on lab studies rather than real patients taking these two together, so it may never cause a noticeable problem. Still, since avacopan is a serious medication, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Oregon grape rather than starting or stopping anything on your own.

Oregon grape is a shrub whose root contains berberine and related compounds. What Is Avacopan Used For?

Brand name: Tavneos

Tavneos (avacopan) is used to treat severe active ANCA-associated vasculitis in adults — specifically the forms known as granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and microscopic polyangiitis (MPA). These are serious autoimmune conditions in which the immune system attacks small blood vessels, causing damage to the kidneys, lungs, and other organs.

Tavneos is used as an add-on treatment alongside standard therapies, including glucocorticoids (steroid medicines). It is not a replacement for steroids — it works together with them.
