Oregon Grape and Triamcinolone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Triamcinolone

Triamcinolone falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Oregon Grape interacts with.

Theoretically, Oregon grape might increase serum levels of drugs that are P-glycoprotein (P-gp) substrates.
In vitro research suggests that Oregon grape extracts inhibit P-gp efflux.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the idea behind this pairing. Triamcinolone is a corticosteroid, and a transport protein called P-glycoprotein (P-gp) helps shuttle some of it back out of your cells and gut. Oregon grape, thanks to compounds like berberine, may block that pump in lab studies. If P-gp is slowed down, a bit more triamcinolone could stay in your body, which in theory might mean stronger steroid effects or more side effects like fluid retention, raised blood sugar, mood changes, or trouble sleeping.

That said, I want to be honest with you: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not real patient cases. It's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you take triamcinolone regularly, but it's not a reason to panic.

  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
