Oregon Grape + Temazepam
Temazepam brand names: Restoril, Apo-Temazepam, Dom-Temazepam, Gen-Temazepam, Novo-Temazepam, and others.
Temazepam falls into 2 drug categories that Oregon Grape can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, Oregon grape might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Oregon Grape interacts with whole categories of medication. Temazepam falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Oregon Grape in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Temazepam
Temazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Oregon Grape interacts with.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of Oregon grape, can have sedative effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the short version: Temazepam (Restoril) already slows your brain down to help you sleep. Oregon grape contains berberine, and in animal studies that compound showed some calming, sedative-like effects of its own. So the worry is that stacking the two could add up, leaving you groggier than expected, with more next-morning drowsiness, dizziness, or unsteadiness on your feet.
I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It's theoretical, based on lab and animal research, not solid human data, so it's not a reason to panic. Still, since both can make you sleepy, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you're older or take other things that make you tired.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Temazepam also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of Oregon grape, moderately inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4).
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear temazepam from your system. Berberine, the main active compound in Oregon grape, may slow that enzyme down a bit. If clearance slows, more temazepam can linger in your blood, which could make its effects stronger or longer-lasting. With a sleep medicine, that might show up as next-morning grogginess, extra drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling unsteady on your feet.
I'll be honest though, this is a theoretical concern based mostly on lab work, not strong human studies, so for many people it may not amount to much. Still, since both can make you sleepy, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially in concentrated supplement doses.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

This page covers Oregon Grape only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Temazepam page lists 197 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: 1,4-butanediol (major), Activated Charcoal (major), Beer (major), Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (ghb) (major) and Grapefruit (major).
By severity: 9 major · 150 moderate · 38 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Temazepam page
“Alcohol is the interaction I would flag first for anyone taking temazepam (Restoril), a benzodiazepine sleep medicine. Beer and wine both carry major ratings because they layer their own sedation on top of a drug that already depresses the nervous system, and that additive drowsiness runs through 78 of the 197 supplements on file.”

What is Oregon Grape?
- Psoriasis (topical)
- Eczema and other skin conditions
- Digestive upset
- Mild skin infections
- General 'detox' or tonic use
Oregon grape is a shrub whose root contains berberine and related compounds. The strongest (though still modest) evidence is for topical creams that may slightly ease psoriasis; evidence for other uses is limited.
