CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Bromazepam

Theoretically, Oregon grape might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of Oregon grape, can have sedative effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Bromazepam (Lectopam) is a benzodiazepine, so it already works by calming the brain and nervous system. It can leave you feeling drowsy, relaxed, and a little slowed down. The concern here is simply that Oregon grape contains berberine, which in animal studies showed mild sedative effects of its own. Stack those two together and you could, in theory, feel more sleepy, foggy, or unsteady than usual.

I'll be straight with you: this is a theoretical worry based only on lab and animal research, not on real cases in people. So I wouldn't panic. Still, since both can dial up drowsiness, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't drive until you know how you feel.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bromazepam page

“Bromazepam (Lectopam) is a benzodiazepine prescribed for anxiety, and because it already slows the brain, anything else with a sedative pull can tip ordinary drowsiness into something dangerous. Eight of the 99 supplement and herbal ingredients here carry a major rating, and those eight are where I would start.”
