Pectin and Amphotericin, Tetracycline

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Amphotericin, Tetracycline

Amphotericin, Tetracycline falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Pectin interacts with.

Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, potentially decreasing their effectiveness.
A small clinical study shows that taking tetracycline with bismuth subsalicylate in a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of tetracycline by about 34%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, bismuth subsalicylate, or the combination.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with tetracycline: pectin is a soluble fiber that forms a gel in your gut, and that gel can grab onto the antibiotic and keep some of it from being absorbed into your bloodstream. Less antibiotic getting in can mean a weaker punch against the infection you're trying to clear. One small study saw absorption drop by about a third, though that mix also included kaolin and bismuth, so we can't pin it all on pectin alone.

This is more of a theoretical, separate-them-in-time concern than a dangerous one. A practical move is to space your pectin or fiber supplement a couple of hours apart from your tetracycline dose. Check with your pharmacist on the best timing for your schedule.

  • Appetite and weight management

Pectin is a natural soluble fiber found in fruits like apples and citrus, and it is widely used in foods and as a fiber supplement.
