Drug & supplement interaction

Propionyl-l-carnitine + Dobutamine

Dobutamine brand name: Dobutrex.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Propionyl-l-carnitine and Dobutamine in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Propionyl-l-carnitine and Dobutamine

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Dobutamine and Propionyl-l-carnitine in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Dobutamine

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Dobutamine is filed under a single classification — oral drugs. Propionyl-l-carnitine has documented interactions with 3 drug classes — the most serious being acenocoumarol (sintrom) (moderate), thyroid hormone (moderate) and warfarin (coumadin) (moderate) — and none of Dobutamine’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Propionyl-l-carnitine and Dobutamine May Share a Side Effect

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

    Dobutamine

Listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Dobutamine, and in voluntary FDA adverse-event reports. Read the label on DailyMed ›

Reported for Propionyl-l-carnitine but not commonly for Dobutamine: back pain, vomiting and diarrhea.

Effects for Dobutamine come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Propionyl-l-carnitine come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 4,905 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Dobutamine that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Dobutamine

This page covers Propionyl-l-carnitine only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Dobutamine page lists 17 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Coffee Charcoal (moderate), European Mandrake (moderate), Glucomannan (moderate) and Guar Gum (moderate).

By severity: 1 major · 7 moderate · 9 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dobutamine page

“Activated charcoal is the one entry here I'd treat as a genuine hazard alongside dobutamine (Dobutrex), a hospital medicine given by IV drip to strengthen a struggling heart. Charcoal binds many drugs and can cut their levels even when the drug isn't taken by mouth, and it's the only major-rated interaction of the 17 on this page.”

About Propionyl-l-carnitine

What is Propionyl-l-carnitine?

  • Peripheral artery disease and leg pain
  • Heart and circulation support
  • Energy and exercise performance
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Diabetic nerve pain

Propionyl-l-carnitine is a form of the amino acid derivative carnitine that the body uses to help turn fat into energy, and it is studied mostly for circulation problems like peripheral artery disease. Some evidence suggests it may help walking distance in people with poor leg circulation, but results are mixed and it is not a substitute for standard medical care. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a medical condition or take other medicines.

Capsules, tablets, oral powder

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Propionyl-l-carnitine is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Propionyl-l-carnitine record says about it on its own.

Propionyl-l-carnitine: dosing

There is no single official dose of PLC for supplement use, and the right amount can depend on the condition being studied and the specific product. They can help you decide whether PLC is appropriate for you and what amount makes sense.Do not assume more is better. Higher doses raise the chance of side effects without guaranteeing more benefit.

About Dobutamine

What Is Dobutamine Used For?

Brand name: Dobutrex

Dobutamine injection is used when the heart suddenly loses its ability to pump blood effectively — a condition called cardiac decompensation. This can happen because of organic heart disease or as a result of heart surgery. It is given intravenously (through an IV) in a hospital or clinical setting to provide short-term inotropic support, meaning it helps the heart muscle contract more strongly.

Clinical trial experience with intravenous dobutamine extends only up to 48 hours of use. Dobutamine has not been shown to be safe or effective for long-term treatment of heart failure, and long-term use of similar drugs has been linked to increased risk of hospitalization and death.

Most-Reported Side Effects for Dobutamine

Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome 449 reports

How was the Propionyl-l-carnitine and Dobutamine combination checked?
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes. Dobutamine is filed under 1 classification, and Propionyl-l-carnitine has documented interactions with 3 drug classes — none of Dobutamine's classifications are among them. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded in our dataset, so this describes how the check was run rather than guaranteeing safety.
Does Propionyl-l-carnitine interact with any other medications?
