Why this applies to Thyroglobulin
Thyroglobulin falls under THYROID HORMONE — the group Propionyl-l-carnitine interacts with.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism. It is unclear if such an interaction would occur with propionyl-L-carnitine.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: Thyroglobulin (Proloid) is an older thyroid hormone replacement, used when your thyroid is underactive. Carnitine forms like L-carnitine seem to act as a mild brake on thyroid hormone, blocking it from getting into the nucleus of your cells where it does its job. In theory, that could make your thyroid medicine work a little less well, so you might notice hypothyroid symptoms creeping back, like fatigue, feeling cold, weight gain, or constipation.
Now, the honest part: this is mostly theoretical, and it has been studied with regular L-carnitine, not propionyl-L-carnitine specifically. So we don't really know if PLC behaves the same way. I wouldn't panic, but I also wouldn't start it on your own. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and if you do begin it, getting your thyroid levels rechecked is a smart move.
