Propionyl-l-carnitine and Testosterone Undecanoate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

THYROID HORMONE

Why this applies to Testosterone Undecanoate

Testosterone Undecanoate falls under THYROID HORMONE — the group Propionyl-l-carnitine interacts with.

Theoretically, acetyl-L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism. It is unclear if such an interaction would occur with propionyl-L-carnitine.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

I want to be upfront with you here, because the interaction in our system was written about thyroid hormone, not testosterone. The concern is that carnitine may block thyroid hormone from working inside cells. Testosterone undecanoate is a completely different kind of medicine, a male sex hormone given for low testosterone, so that specific thyroid-blocking mechanism really doesn't apply to it.

In plain terms, there isn't good evidence that propionyl-L-carnitine changes how testosterone undecanoate works, raises or lowers your levels, or affects things like energy, mood, or muscle. This is more of a database category match than a real, proven problem. Still, since both can affect how you feel, it's worth running your full list past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Propionyl-l-carnitine

What is Propionyl-l-carnitine?

  • Peripheral artery disease and leg pain
  • Heart and circulation support
  • Energy and exercise performance
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Diabetic nerve pain

Propionyl-l-carnitine is a form of the amino acid derivative carnitine that the body uses to help turn fat into energy, and it is studied mostly for circulation problems like peripheral artery disease. Some evidence suggests it may help walking distance in people with poor leg circulation, but results are mixed and it is not a substitute for standard medical care. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a medical condition or take other medicines.

About Testosterone Injection

What Is Testosterone Injection Used For?

Brand names: Andriol, Aveed, Jatenzo, Kyzatrex

Testosterone injection is primarily used in men whose bodies do not produce enough testosterone on their own — a condition called hypogonadism. This includes primary hypogonadism (a problem with the testicles themselves, such as from injury, infection, or surgery) and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (caused by problems in the brain's hormone signaling from the hypothalamus or pituitary gland). It is also used to stimulate puberty in carefully selected adolescent males with clearly delayed puberty who have not responded to other support.

Testosterone Enanthate Injection is also approved for use in women with advanced, inoperable metastatic breast cancer (specifically skeletal metastases) who are one to five years past menopause, or in premenopausal women with hormone-responsive breast cancer who have had their ovaries removed. This use should be directed by an oncologist. Aveed (testosterone undecanoate) is specifically approved for male hypogonadism only.
