Here's the short version on giving shark cartilage alongside Synagis (palivizumab). Palivizumab is a lab-made antibody given as a shot to help prevent RSV lung infections in high-risk babies. It works by lending the immune system ready-made protection against the virus, so anything that nudges the immune system could, in theory, change how it behaves.

The concern on file is purely theoretical. In test-tube studies, shark cartilage seemed to rev up immune activity, but this has never actually been seen in people, and it has not been shown to weaken palivizumab's protection. I'd add that shark cartilage isn't recommended in the first place. Since this involves a child and an injectable medicine, please run it by your pediatrician or pharmacist before using any supplement.

What Is Palivizumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Synagis

Synagis (palivizumab) is used to prevent serious lower respiratory tract disease caused by RSV — not to treat an infection that has already started. It is given to high-risk babies and young children before and during RSV season.

Synagis is approved for infants born at 35 weeks gestation or earlier who are 6 months old or younger at the start of RSV season; children up to 24 months old with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD, a chronic lung condition) who needed medical treatment in the past 6 months; and children up to 24 months old with hemodynamically significant congenital heart disease (a heart defect that affects blood flow).
