Interferon Beta-1b falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Siberian Cocklebur interacts with.

Siberian cocklebur can adversely affect the liver. It has been linked to many cases of hepatotoxicity and some cases of liver failure. Theoretically, concomitant use with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage. Some of these drugs include acarbose (Precose, Prandase), amiodarone (Cordarone), atorvastatin (Lipitor), azathioprine (Imuran), carbamazepine (Tegretol), cerivastatin (Baycol), diclofenac (Voltaren), felbamate (Felbatol), fenofibrate (TriCor), fluvastatin (Lescol), gemfibrozil (Lopid), isoniazid, itraconazole, (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), leflunomide (Arava), lovastatin (Mevacor), methotrexate (Rheumatrex), nevirapine (Viramune), niacin, nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin), pioglitazone (Actos), pravastatin (Pravachol), pyrazinamide, rifampin (Rifadin), ritonavir (Norvir), rosiglitazone (Avandia), simvastatin (Zocor), tacrine (Cognex), tamoxifen, terbinafine (Lamisil), valproic acid, and zileuton (Zyflo).

Here's the concern with pairing these two: Siberian cocklebur has been tied to real cases of liver injury, including some serious ones. Interferon beta-1b can also stress the liver and routinely raises liver enzymes (transaminases) on its own, which is why your MS team checks bloodwork periodically while you're on it. Stacking a liver-stressing herb on top of a medicine that already does this can add up and raise your risk of liver damage.

This isn't about how either one is activated; it's simply two things that can each be hard on the liver working in the same direction. Watch for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, unusual tiredness, or nausea. Please don't change anything on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or neurologist before combining these, and given cocklebur's known toxicity, it may be best avoided entirely.

What Is Interferon Beta-1b Injection Used For?

Brand names: Betaseron, Betaferon, Extavia

  • Interferon beta-1b injection is used to reduce episodes of symptoms in patients with relapsing-remitting (course of disease where symptoms flare up from time to time) of multiple sclerosis (MS, a disease in which the nerves do not function properly and patients may experience weakness, numbness, loss of muscle coordination and problems with vision, speech, and bladder control). Interferon beta-1b is in a class of medications called immunomodulators. It is not known exactly how interferon beta-1b works to treat MS.
