Here's the gist with slippery elm and Modafinil: slippery elm forms a thick, slick gel in your gut. The concern is that this gel could coat your stomach and intestines and physically slow how much Modafinil your body absorbs. If less drug gets in, you might notice it working less well, meaning more of the daytime sleepiness or fatigue you take it to fight.

Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how the herb behaves, not something proven in real patients, so don't panic. A simple fix is timing: many people space slippery elm and their medications a couple of hours apart so the gel isn't sitting on the pill. Before you do anything, run it by your pharmacist or doctor to be safe.

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Brand names: Provigil, Sparlon, Alertec

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
