Thyme and Desogestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ESTROGENS

Why this applies to Desogestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol

Desogestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under ESTROGENS — the group Thyme interacts with.

Theoretically, thyme might competitively inhibit the effects of estrogen replacement therapy.
In vitro research shows that thyme has estrogen receptor-binding activity and phytoestrogen content. However, this effect has not been observed in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: your birth control pill combines an estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) with a progestin (desogestrel). Lab studies show that compounds in thyme can latch onto estrogen receptors, the same spots your pill's estrogen acts on. In a test tube, thyme could theoretically compete with that estrogen and blunt its effect a little.

I want to be honest about how weak this is. It has only been seen in cell and animal research, never in real people, so we don't have proof it actually weakens your pill or affects pregnancy prevention. Cooking with thyme or sipping thyme tea is not something I'd worry about. If you're thinking about a concentrated thyme supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Thyme

What is Thyme?

Thyme
  • Cough and respiratory congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Digestive upset
  • Antimicrobial and antiseptic uses
  • Flavoring in cooking

Thyme is a common kitchen herb that has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and digestive complaints. It is generally safe in the amounts found in food, and some cough products that combine thyme with other herbs have modest supporting evidence, but high-quality research on thyme alone is limited. The concentrated essential oil should never be swallowed undiluted.
