Thyme and Estropipate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ESTROGENS

Why this applies to Estropipate

Estropipate falls under ESTROGENS — the group Thyme interacts with.

Theoretically, thyme might competitively inhibit the effects of estrogen replacement therapy.
In vitro research shows that thyme has estrogen receptor-binding activity and phytoestrogen content. However, this effect has not been observed in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: Estropipate is a form of estrogen, and lab studies suggest thyme contains plant compounds that can latch onto the same estrogen receptors in your body. The worry is that thyme might compete with your medication and slightly blunt how well it works. In theory, that could mean your menopause symptoms (think hot flashes, night sweats, or vaginal dryness) don't get controlled as well as they should.

The important part: this is based only on test tube research, and it has never actually been seen in people. The thyme you sprinkle on dinner is very unlikely to matter at all. If you're using concentrated thyme supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your symptoms.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Estropipate page

“Estropipate (Ogen, Ortho EST) is an estrogen taken for menopause symptoms, and the women who use it are drawn to hormone-touted herbs, which fill this list of 77 ingredients, so it deserves genuine care. Grapefruit is one of two major-rated entries; it blocks the enzyme that clears estrogen, so levels and side effects can climb.”

About Thyme

What is Thyme?

Thyme
  • Cough and respiratory congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Digestive upset
  • Antimicrobial and antiseptic uses
  • Flavoring in cooking

Thyme is a common kitchen herb that has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and digestive complaints. It is generally safe in the amounts found in food, and some cough products that combine thyme with other herbs have modest supporting evidence, but high-quality research on thyme alone is limited. The concentrated essential oil should never be swallowed undiluted.
