Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: thyme isn't likely to cause trouble with your Lybrel (ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel). This concern comes only from lab dish studies, where compounds in thyme can weakly attach to estrogen receptors. In theory, that could nudge against the estrogen in your pill, but this has never actually been shown to happen in people.

Practically speaking, the thyme you cook with or sip as a tea is no worry at all. Even concentrated thyme supplements have no real-world evidence of weakening birth control or reducing the estrogen's intended effects. If you're using Lybrel for contraception and want to be sure, just check with your pharmacist or doctor, but I wouldn't lose sleep over a little thyme.

About Thyme

What is Thyme?

Thyme
  • Cough and respiratory congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Digestive upset
  • Antimicrobial and antiseptic uses
  • Flavoring in cooking

Thyme is a common kitchen herb that has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and digestive complaints. It is generally safe in the amounts found in food, and some cough products that combine thyme with other herbs have modest supporting evidence, but high-quality research on thyme alone is limited. The concentrated essential oil should never be swallowed undiluted.
