Thyme and Triflupromazine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Triflupromazine

Triflupromazine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Thyme interacts with.

Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and thyme essential oil might reduce the effects of anticholinergic drugs.
In vitro evidence suggests that thyme essential oil and specific essential oil constituents like thymohydroquinone and carvacrol can inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE). However, this effect has not been observed in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with thyme and triflupromazine (Vesprin), an older antipsychotic that also has anticholinergic (drying) activity. In test-tube studies, compounds in thyme essential oil like thymol and carvacrol can block acetylcholinesterase, which is roughly the opposite of what an anticholinergic drug does. In theory, that could slightly dampen triflupromazine's effects. But this is a big theoretical caveat: it has only been seen in the lab, never confirmed in people.

Practically, the sprinkle of thyme you cook with is not going to matter at all. Concentrated thyme essential oil is a different story and shouldn't be swallowed anyway. If you're using strong thyme supplements regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

These ratings are for information only. Never start, stop, or otherwise change your therapy before speaking with your provider.

This page covers Thyme only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Triflupromazine page lists 74 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Henbane (major), Indian Snakeroot (major), Rauvolfia Vomitoria (major), Scopolia (major) and Alfalfa (moderate).

By severity: 4 major · 55 moderate · 15 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Triflupromazine page

“Henbane carries the clearest danger on this page. Taken with triflupromazine (Vesprin), an older phenothiazine antipsychotic, its atropine-like alkaloids pile onto side effects the drug already produces (dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, sedation), and it is one of just four major-rated entries, alongside scopolia, Indian snaker…”

About Thyme

What is Thyme?

Thyme
  • Cough and respiratory congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Digestive upset
  • Antimicrobial and antiseptic uses
  • Flavoring in cooking

Thyme is a common kitchen herb that has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and digestive complaints. It is generally safe in the amounts found in food, and some cough products that combine thyme with other herbs have modest supporting evidence, but high-quality research on thyme alone is limited. The concentrated essential oil should never be swallowed undiluted.
