Wild Carrot and Griseofulvin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS

Why this applies to Griseofulvin

Griseofulvin falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Wild Carrot interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might result in increased photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: griseofulvin already has a known tendency to make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you can sunburn faster or break out in a rash after time outdoors. Wild carrot contains plant compounds that, at least in theory, may add to that sun sensitivity. Put the two together and you might be a little more prone to burning.

I want to be honest about how solid this is. This concern is theoretical, based on how these things behave rather than real studies in people, so it's not a reason to panic. Still, it's easy to play it safe. Use sunscreen, wear a hat, and limit strong midday sun while on griseofulvin. If you'd like to use wild carrot, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Griseofulvin page

“If you take griseofulvin for a fungal infection of the skin, scalp, or nails, give this list of 61 ingredients real attention. The single major entry is activated charcoal, which binds the drug in your gut so less of it reaches your blood and the infection gets less treatment.”

About Wild Carrot

What is Wild Carrot?

Wild Carrot
  • Urinary and bladder complaints
  • Digestive upset and gas
  • Menstrual support
  • Supporting milk production
  • Mild diuretic (water pill) effect

Wild carrot is a traditional herb (the wild ancestor of the garden carrot) used mostly for urinary, digestive, and menstrual complaints. High-quality human studies are lacking, so its benefits are unproven, and it should be avoided in pregnancy because of traditional use to affect the uterus. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

About Griseofulvin

What Is Griseofulvin Used For?

Brand names: Fulvicin PG, Fulvicin-U/F, Grisactin Ultra, Grisactin

Griseofulvin treats dermatophyte (ringworm-type) fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails that haven't cleared up with topical (cream or ointment) treatment alone. It is used for tinea corporis (ringworm of the body), tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), tinea barbae (ringworm of the beard area), tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp), and tinea unguium (fungal nail infection).

It only works against specific dermatophyte fungi. Griseofulvin does not treat bacterial infections, yeast infections (candidiasis), or other fungal infections such as histoplasmosis, sporotrichosis, or tinea versicolor. A lab test or fungal culture should confirm the infection before treatment starts.
