Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for prazosin (Minipress): it lowers your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels. The concern on file is that large amounts of wild carrot seed oil may have so-called cardiotonic effects that could tug against your blood pressure medicine and make it work less well. In plain terms, your numbers might not come down the way you and your doctor want.

I want to be honest about how strong this is: it's a theoretical worry based on the plant's chemistry, not on real human studies. Ordinary culinary amounts are very unlikely to matter, while concentrated seed-oil supplements are the bigger question mark. Before adding wild carrot, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor, and keep an eye on your home blood pressure readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Prazosin page

“Prazosin (Minipress) relaxes blood vessels by blocking alpha receptors, which is why doctors prescribe it for high blood pressure and, often, for PTSD nightmares. Sudden pressure drops with dizziness or fainting are already its signature risk, so the 137 supplements on this list warrant genuine attention rather than a quick skim.”

About Wild Carrot

What is Wild Carrot?

Wild Carrot
  • Urinary and bladder complaints
  • Digestive upset and gas
  • Menstrual support
  • Supporting milk production
  • Mild diuretic (water pill) effect

Wild carrot is a traditional herb (the wild ancestor of the garden carrot) used mostly for urinary, digestive, and menstrual complaints. High-quality human studies are lacking, so its benefits are unproven, and it should be avoided in pregnancy because of traditional use to affect the uterus. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
