Here's the thing to know: your medicine (Ascriptin with Codeine) already contains aspirin, which is a salicylate. Wintergreen oil is basically a concentrated cousin of aspirin, since its main ingredient, methyl salicylate, acts a lot like the salicylic acid in aspirin. So if you rub on a lot of wintergreen oil, cover it with a bandage or wrap, or use it day after day over big areas of skin, some of it gets absorbed and stacks on top of the aspirin you're already taking.

That extra salicylate load could nudge you toward aspirin-type problems like ringing in the ears, stomach upset or bleeding, nausea, or fast breathing. This concern is based mostly on pharmacology rather than lots of reported cases, and a normal small dab usually isn't a big deal. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using both regularly.
