Acamprosate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with acamprosate (Campral) and xanthan gum. Xanthan gum is a thick soluble fiber, and the only real concern on file is that its gel can slow how fast your stomach empties. In theory, that could change how much acamprosate you absorb. This matters a little because acamprosate already isn't absorbed very well to begin with, so anything that slows things in the gut could nudge its levels.

The good news: this is a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, not something proven to cause problems with this specific drug. Acamprosate isn't a prodrug, so we're just talking about absorption, not activation. To play it safe, a simple fix is spacing them out, taking your acamprosate first and the xanthan gum 30 to 60 minutes later. If you use xanthan gum regularly, mention it to your pharmacist.
