Here's the thing about coffee charcoal: like other charcoal products, it has a porous surface that can grab onto things in your gut. If you swallow it close to your acamprosate (Campral) dose, it may bind some of that medicine before your body absorbs it. That means less acamprosate gets into your system, which could quietly weaken the support it gives you in staying off alcohol.

This concern is based on how charcoal behaves in general, not on direct studies with acamprosate, so think of it as a sensible precaution rather than a proven problem. An easy fix is spacing them out by at least two hours. Since staying alcohol-free matters so much, check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing these two.

Acamprosate Calcium delayed-release tablets are used to help people with alcohol dependence maintain abstinence — meaning they are used to support staying sober, not to help someone stop drinking in the first place. The medication is started after a person has already gone through alcohol withdrawal and is alcohol-free.

Acamprosate Calcium delayed-release tablets are meant to be part of a broader treatment plan that includes counseling and other psychosocial support. They have not been shown to be effective in people who have not yet detoxed or achieved abstinence before starting treatment.
