Here's the gist with coffee charcoal and nifedipine. Like other forms of charcoal, this roasted coffee material has a porous surface that can grab onto things in your gut, including medicines. If you swallow it too close to your nifedipine dose, it may soak up some of the drug before your body absorbs it. That means less nifedipine gets into your bloodstream, which could weaken its blood pressure or chest pain control. Nifedipine is not a prodrug, so this is simply a case of getting less of the active medicine.

The good news is this concern is theoretical, based on how charcoal behaves rather than firm studies. A simple fix is spacing them out by at least two hours. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

What Is Nifedipine Used For?

Brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, Nifed, Procardia, Adalat XL, Adalat CC, Adalat LA, Adalat Retard, Adipine MR, Adipine XL, Cardilate MR, Coracten SR, Coracten XL, Fortipine LA 40, Hypolar Retard 20, Nifedipress MR, Nifopress Retard, Tensipine MR

Nifedipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic stable angina (chest pain brought on by physical effort), and vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by spasm of the coronary arteries, sometimes called Prinzmetal's angina). Lowering blood pressure with nifedipine helps reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

The capsule form is approved for vasospastic angina and chronic stable angina only — it is not approved for high blood pressure. The extended-release tablet (including Procardia) covers all three uses: vasospastic angina, chronic stable angina, and high blood pressure.
