Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with coffee charcoal and your aspirin. Like other charcoal products, this stuff has a porous surface that can grab onto medicine sitting in your stomach and gut. If aspirin gets bound up that way, less of it actually makes it into your bloodstream, so you may get weaker pain or fever relief than you expected.

One thing to keep in mind: this concern is mostly based on how charcoal behaves in theory, not strong human studies, so it isn't a reason to panic. The easy fix is timing. Taking your aspirin at least two hours apart from the coffee charcoal usually keeps them from bumping into each other. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin page

“Aspirin thins the blood on purpose, and most of the 242 supplements and herbs on this page push that same effect further, so genuine care is warranted here rather than a shrug. Just over 200 of the entries can add to aspirin's antiplatelet action and raise the odds of bruising or bleeding, particularly in the stomach.”

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
