Carmustine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the good news first: carmustine (BiCNU, Gliadel) is almost always given as an IV infusion or as a wafer placed in the brain during surgery, not as a pill you swallow. Because xanthan gum only affects drugs as they pass through your stomach and gut, it really has no realistic way to interfere with how carmustine works in these forms.

The note in our database is a broad, theoretical caution about oral medications. Soluble fibers like xanthan gum form a gel that can slow stomach emptying and slightly change how a swallowed drug is absorbed. Since carmustine isn't taken by mouth, this concern mostly doesn't apply. If you're on other oral medicines, a simple habit is to take them about 30 to 60 minutes before any xanthan gum. When in doubt, run it by your oncology team or pharmacist.

What Is Carmustine Used For?

Brand names: Gliadel, BiCNU, Gliadel Wafer

Carmustine for injection is used for palliative therapy (easing the disease rather than curing it). It can be given alone or with other approved cancer drugs. Its uses are brain tumors, multiple myeloma, relapsed or refractory Hodgkin's lymphoma and relapsed or refractory non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

Gliadel is a separate wafer that a surgeon places in the brain. Gliadel is used for newly diagnosed high-grade glioma, along with surgery and radiation. It is also used for recurrent glioblastoma, along with surgery.
