Xanthan Gum and Chlorpropamide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Chlorpropamide

Chlorpropamide falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the practical scoop. Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your stomach. Because of that gel, it can slow how fast your stomach empties and may, in theory, slightly change how your body absorbs chlorpropamide, your sulfonylurea diabetes pill. This isn't a prodrug situation, so we're really just talking about how smoothly the medicine gets soaked up, not whether it gets activated.

I'll be honest with you, this concern is theoretical and rated minor. There's no strong proof it causes real problems. To play it safe, a simple fix is to take your chlorpropamide first and then your xanthan gum about 30 to 60 minutes later. Keep an eye on your blood sugar, and check with your pharmacist or doctor if anything feels off.
