Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Quick heads-up about combining xanthan gum with cromolyn. Most people know cromolyn as Nasalcrom, the nasal spray, but it also comes in an oral form (often used for certain gut conditions). This interaction only matters for the oral version. The concern here is purely theoretical, based on how xanthan gum behaves as a soluble fiber.

Because xanthan gum forms a gel and slows down how fast your stomach empties, it could in theory trap some of the cromolyn and lower how much your body absorbs. That might make an oral dose work a little less well. To stay on the safe side, a simple gap helps: take your cromolyn first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the xanthan gum. Food amounts of xanthan gum are unlikely to cause trouble. If you have questions, your pharmacist can confirm.
