Xanthan Gum and Desiccated Thyroid Extract

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Desiccated Thyroid Extract

Desiccated Thyroid Extract falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with your thyroid medication (like Westhroid or WP Thyroid) and xanthan gum. Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that forms a thick gel and slows how fast your stomach empties. In theory, if it's sitting in your gut at the same time as your thyroid pill, it could grab onto some of that dose and keep your body from fully absorbing it. Thyroid hormone is one of those medicines where steady, reliable absorption really matters.

The good news is this is only a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, not strong real-world data. To stay safe, simple timing usually does the trick: take your thyroid medication first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any xanthan gum. If you use it daily, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your levels.

This page covers Xanthan Gum only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Desiccated Thyroid Extract page lists 38 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Tiratricol (major), Acetyl-l-carnitine (moderate), Alpha-lipoic Acid (moderate) and Ascophyllum Nodosum (moderate).

By severity: 2 major · 26 moderate · 10 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Desiccated Thyroid Extract page

“Activated charcoal is the first thing I would flag for anyone taking desiccated thyroid extract (Westhroid, WP Thyroid). It binds the medication in the gut and can sharply cut absorption, and it shares the major rating with tiratricol, itself a thyroid hormone that stacks on top of your prescribed dose.”
