Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine, Triprolidine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: Actifed DM is a combo of a cough suppressant (dextromethorphan), a decongestant (pseudoephedrine), and an antihistamine (triprolidine). Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that forms a thick gel in your stomach and slows how fast things empty out of it. In theory, that gel could slow or slightly blunt how these medicines get absorbed, so you might notice your cold symptoms not easing as quickly. This is a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, not something well documented, and it's rated minor.

An easy fix is spacing them out: take your Actifed DM first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any concentrated xanthan gum product. Small food amounts are unlikely to matter. If you use thickened liquids regularly, ask your pharmacist for the best timing.
