Droxidopa falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with droxidopa (Northera) and xanthan gum. Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a gel in your stomach and gut, and that gel can slow how fast things empty out of your stomach. In theory, that could change how quickly an oral pill like droxidopa gets absorbed. If absorption is delayed or blunted, the medicine might not raise your blood pressure as smoothly, which could mean the dizziness or lightheadedness you're treating doesn't get covered as well.

The good news is this is only a theoretical concern based on how fiber works, not something proven in studies, and it's rated minor. A simple fix is timing: take your droxidopa first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any xanthan gum. If you use it daily as a thickener, just run your routine past your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Droxidopa Used For?

Brand name: Northera

Droxidopa capsules — available as the brand Northera and as generic Droxidopa — are used to treat orthostatic dizziness, lightheadedness, and the feeling of nearly blacking out in adults with symptomatic neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (nOH) — a condition where blood pressure drops significantly when you stand up, due to a problem with the nervous system.

Both Northera and droxidopa capsules are approved for nOH caused by:

  • Parkinson's disease
  • Multiple system atrophy
  • Pure autonomic failure
  • Dopamine beta-hydroxylase deficiency
  • Non-diabetic autonomic neuropathy
Effectiveness beyond 2 weeks has not been firmly established, so your doctor should check periodically whether it is still working for you.
