Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist for your Zepatier (elbasvir and grazoprevir). Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your gut and slows how quickly things move out of your stomach. In theory, that gel could trap a little of your pill and slightly change how much medicine gets absorbed. This concern is purely theoretical, based on how fiber behaves, not on real cases with this drug, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Still, with a hepatitis C treatment you want steady, reliable blood levels so the virus stays fully suppressed. A simple fix: take your Zepatier first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any concentrated xanthan gum. Food amounts are very unlikely to matter. If you use thickened liquids or fiber supplements daily, check with your pharmacist to time it well.

What Is Elbasvir and Grazoprevir Used For?

Brand name: Zepatier

Zepatier is used to treat chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 or genotype 4 infection in adults and children 12 years of age and older (or weighing at least 30 kg). It works against both the most common strain of HCV (genotype 1) and genotype 4.

Depending on the specific genotype, prior treatment history, and certain viral characteristics, Zepatier may be prescribed alone or combined with another antiviral medicine called ribavirin. Your prescriber will determine the right regimen and duration for your situation.
