Eltrombopag falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the practical side of mixing xanthan gum with eltrombopag (Promacta). Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your stomach and slows how fast things move through. In theory, that gel could trap a little of your eltrombopag dose or slow how much your body absorbs. If less gets in, your platelet count might not climb as well as it should, which matters since the whole point of this drug is to keep your platelets up and lower bleeding risk.

To be clear, this is only a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, not something proven with eltrombopag specifically. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your eltrombopag first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any xanthan gum. Eltrombopag also has its own spacing rules with food, calcium, and antacids, so check the timing with your pharmacist.

It is generally recognized as safe in the small amounts found in food, but large doses can cause gas, bloating, and loose stools. About Eltrombopag

What Is Eltrombopag Used For?

Brand names: Promacta, Revolade, Alvaiz

Eltrombopag treats thrombocytopenia (low platelet counts) in several different conditions. It is used for adults and children (age 1 and older, depending on the product) with persistent or chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) — a condition where the immune system destroys platelets — when other treatments like steroids or immunoglobulins haven't worked well enough. It is also used to raise platelet counts in adults with chronic hepatitis C whose low platelet count prevents them from starting or staying on interferon-based antiviral therapy.

Eltrombopag tablets (including Promacta) are also approved — alone or combined with immunosuppressive therapy — for adults and certain children (age 2 and older) with severe aplastic anemia, a serious bone marrow failure condition. Alvaiz (a specific brand) shares most of these uses but has product-specific dosing that is not interchangeable milligram-for-milligram with other eltrombopag products. The oral suspension formulation is approved for ITP and for refractory severe aplastic anemia, but is not approved for first-line severe aplastic anemia in combination with immunosuppressive therapy.
