Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with felbamate and xanthan gum: this is a very mild, mostly theoretical concern. Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a gel in your stomach and can slow things down a bit. In theory, that gel could change how quickly your felbamate tablet or liquid gets absorbed. This isn't about felbamate being broken down differently, it's simply about timing in the gut.

Felbamate is an active seizure medicine (not a prodrug), so you mostly want steady, predictable absorption to keep seizures controlled. An easy fix is to separate them: take your felbamate first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the xanthan gum. There's no strong evidence this causes real problems, but if you use xanthan gum regularly, run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

About Felbamate

What Is Felbamate Used For?

Brand name: Felbatol

Felbamate is not a first-line seizure medication. It is used only when a person's epilepsy has not responded well enough to other treatments and the seizures are severe enough that the serious risks of this drug are considered acceptable.

In adults, felbamate can be used alone or alongside other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain), with or without spreading to become a full seizure. In children, felbamate is used as an add-on treatment for both partial and generalized seizures linked to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of childhood epilepsy. Felbatol is specifically labeled for these uses in both adults and children.
