Fluconazole falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version with fluconazole (Diflucan): xanthan gum is a thick soluble fiber, and when it gels in your stomach it can slow how fast things move through and gel around what you swallow. In theory, that could slow down or slightly reduce how much of your fluconazole dose gets absorbed when you take them at the same time. This is a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, not something proven to cause real problems, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

The easy fix is timing. Take your fluconazole first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any concentrated xanthan gum, like a thickened liquid used for swallowing. Tiny food amounts are very unlikely to matter. If you rely on thickeners daily, just check with your pharmacist so your antifungal still works as it should.

It is generally recognized as safe in the small amounts found in food, but large doses can cause gas, bloating, and loose stools. About Fluconazole

What Is Fluconazole Used For?

Brand names: Diflucan, Diflucan Injection

Fluconazole treats infections caused by Candida and Cryptococcus fungi. Diflucan tablets and oral fluconazole tablets and suspension are approved to treat vaginal yeast infections (vaginal candidiasis), thrush in the mouth or throat (oropharyngeal candidiasis), and yeast infections of the esophagus. All forms — tablets, oral suspension, and injection — are used for cryptococcal meningitis (a serious fungal brain infection). In smaller studies, fluconazole has also shown effectiveness against Candida urinary tract infections, peritonitis (infection in the abdomen), and serious systemic (bloodstream and organ) Candida infections.

Fluconazole is also used to prevent candidiasis in people undergoing bone marrow transplants who receive chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Note that vaginal candidiasis is an approved use for the tablets and Diflucan oral products, but not for the injection or oral suspension alone.
