Megestrol Acetate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with megestrol (Megace) and xanthan gum. Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that swells into a gel and slows how fast your stomach empties. In theory, that gel could trap a little of your megestrol and slow or slightly lower how much of it you absorb. Since megestrol is often used to bring your appetite back and help you gain weight, getting less of it could mean a weaker effect over time.

I want to be clear though: this is a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, not something proven in studies, and it's rated as minor. An easy fix is simple spacing. Take your megestrol first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any xanthan gum thickener. If you use thickened liquids regularly, just run the timing by your pharmacist.

What Is Megestrol Used For?

Megestrol acetate is used for two distinct purposes depending on the formulation. Megestrol Acetate oral suspension is indicated for treating anorexia (loss of appetite), cachexia (severe weight loss and muscle wasting), or unexplained significant weight loss in patients with a diagnosis of AIDS.

Megestrol Acetate tablets are used for the palliative treatment — meaning to ease symptoms, not cure — of advanced breast cancer or endometrial (uterine lining) cancer that is recurrent, inoperable, or has spread to other parts of the body. Tablets are not a replacement for surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.
