Milrinone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the wrinkle with this pairing: milrinone (Primacor) is almost always given as an IV medication in a hospital, not as a pill you swallow. Xanthan gum's fiber effect only matters for drugs that have to be absorbed from your stomach and intestines, so for IV milrinone going straight into your bloodstream, this thickening fiber really shouldn't change anything.

The concern on file is purely theoretical and applies to oral medicines, where xanthan gum can slow how fast a swallowed drug is absorbed. With IV milrinone (used to help a struggling heart pump), there is no realistic clash. If you are ever using xanthan gum to thicken liquids while on heart medicines, just mention it to your pharmacist or care team so they can double-check.

What Is Milrinone Used For?

Brand name: Primacor

Milrinone Lactate Injection and Milrinone Lactate in 5% Dextrose Injection are indicated for the short-term intravenous treatment of acute decompensated heart failure — a sudden or rapidly worsening episode of heart failure that requires immediate, in-hospital care.

This medication is given only in a monitored hospital setting. It is not intended for long-term or home use. Most clinical experience has been in patients who were also taking digoxin and diuretics (water pills).
