Xanthan Gum and Modafinil

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Modafinil

Modafinil falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a gel in your stomach and slows how fast things empty out of it. Because modafinil is swallowed and absorbed in the gut, a thick fiber gel could, in theory, slow down how quickly it gets into your system. That might mean your wakefulness kicks in a little later than usual, not that the drug stops working.

This is a theoretical, minor concern based on how fiber behaves, not on real reports of people running into trouble. Food amounts of xanthan gum are very unlikely to matter. If you use it as a concentrated supplement or to thicken liquids, an easy fix is to take your modafinil first, then have the xanthan gum about 30 to 60 minutes later. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist.

About Modafinil

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Brand names: Provigil, Sparlon, Alertec

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
