Pentostatin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's some good news first: pentostatin (Nipent) is given as an intravenous infusion at the cancer center, not as a pill you swallow. Because it goes straight into your vein, the soluble fiber in xanthan gum wouldn't change how much of the drug gets into your body. The interaction we have on file is about oral medications, where xanthan gum can form a gel and slow how fast a pill is absorbed from the stomach.

So for pentostatin itself, this concern really doesn't apply. That said, if you take any pills at home alongside your chemo, spacing them about 30 to 60 minutes before your xanthan gum is a sensible habit. Always run new supplements by your oncology team during treatment.

Nipent (pentostatin injection) is used to treat hairy cell leukemia, a rare cancer of the blood and bone marrow. It is approved for patients who have not yet received treatment as well as those whose disease did not respond to alpha-interferon therapy.

Nipent is used when the disease is active — meaning it is causing significant drops in red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets, or is producing disease-related symptoms.
